Element 9- Digital Security
Smart Learning Objectives
Digital Security overview
There are all kinds of security protections we use every day in our lives. We lock every door in our home and our vehicles. Keeping our possessions and loved ones safe is the key. Ribble (2015) sets the same definition for our digital lives. These are the safeguard we use to protect our online presence. Mann Jackson (2018) states that school have the added

responsibility of using filters to meet the requirements of the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). Schools can make filtering decisions that promote safety so they are on appropriate sites as well as controlling the learning environment without distraction (Mann Jackson et al.).
Our youngest users are naïve in the notion that there are not individuals out there looking to be harmful in one way or another. Because information is shared so freely it is important to protect yourself so you are not guilty of passing along viruses. So much personal data is now stored on devices it is important to be ever vigilant in exercising good digital citizenship skills. These skills include the importance of setting up passwords or protective measures so our information will not be compromised in the end (Ribble, 2015).

Connections to digital Security
Last year I received an email from a colleague asking to share information with me. I’ll be honest, I thought it was unusual for her to do this and I hesitated for a moment but clicked okay. BOOM, another email went out to all my contacts with a similar email. I contacted my tech director immediately and shared the information. He was able to stop the spread. In the end several of the teachers in the district made the same mistake but we were

able to warn the rest not to open the strange email even from a trusted colleagues email. We are still not sure what they were looking for with the phishing scam. Even with the filters and firewalls schools can be vulnerable, so we must practice and educate students on digital safety.
