Professional development Workshop
Welcome
Start Here
Please begin this professional development by reading the overview on Understanding by Design (UbD). Please follow along in this presentation divided into the three areas as prescribed by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe (2011) on UbD as Stage One- Desired Results, Stage Two- Assessment Evidence and Stage Three Learning Plan. The workshop can be found under the vertical tabs EDT 8210 path to your left in the toolbar column. Please begin with Week #1. If you need assistance I can be reached by following the contact page listed
Understanding by Design Overview
The Understanding by Design framework is a backward model for creating high quality units developed by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe (2011). The intent is for educators to reflect on learning for understanding and curriculum development. UbD offers a commonsense approach where the focus is on transferable concepts and processes that give students the chance to make learning long term and meaningful. |
If planning starts before teaching, the most successful educators reflect on the desired learning outcomes and what assessments will prove that learning has occurred. It is through Grant and Wiggins (2011) “backward-design” approach that link desired results (Stage 1), performance tasks (Stage 2) to the learning plan (Stage 3). The designs of specific lesson plans are developed under the whole comprehensive unit. The goal is for the understanding by design, not just simply luck. Teachers should not toss content and activities at students but identify the specific learning goals and develop a sound instructional path for understanding.
